Meticulous Metiers
Bethlem Gallery
2nd April – 2nd May 2009
An exhibition of dry point etchings, drawings, sculptures and jewellery by Lee Galpin & James Tanner. Both artists are long serving volunteers at The Bethlem Royal Hospital Art Department. Lee began voluntary work after being a patient at the hospital…..experience of art meant so much to him….Their work, although very different in medium has a common intricate process and attention to detail. Lee Galpin’s prints rework the images of our saturated magazine culture, exposing the darker side of human nature persuading us to question our passively accepted norms. In contrast James Tanner’s tranquil ceramic edifices and recycled jewellery suggest a reassuring relationship to objects that they may have once been known to the viewer, a familiar friend a distant memory. Both artists’ work inspires, confronts and questions whilst displaying an infectious love for process and materials.
“My ceramics work is influenced by the built environment particularly industrial buildings and hinterlands, Art Deco and Church buildings” James Tanner
