Free Creative Writing Workshop: Responding to Voices from the Asylum

Monday 27th June or Wednesday 6th July
Bethlem Gallery & Museum of the Mind
10am-3.30pm

This workshop is a fascinating chance for beginner or experienced writers to imagine themselves into what life was like in an asylum.

Experience the old Bethlem Royal Hospital through archive materials – photographs and patient case notes.

Through a gentle, supportive workshop with writer and poet David Gilbert, you will be inspired to discuss, reflect and respond through your own creative writing….

• Imagine yourself as a former patient, cleaner, doctor, nurse or visitor; what might it have felt like then? Your hopes and your fears?

• What would you say to someone back then? If you were an advocate or time- traveller, what would be your truth?

• Or, just write about how you feel when looking at the archival objects, notes and photographs.

// Doors open from 10am with free tea and coffee available, we will start promptly at 10:30am.

// A free lunch is available to participants, up to the value of £5.

// This workshop is free and is open to anyone. It is very popular and has been run multiple times before.

// This is a relaxed event where you will be encouraged to move around the room as you feel the need to, to take time out from the conversations as needed, to have refreshments as and when you need them. We have various quiet spaces you can access at any point in the day.

David Gilbert is Writer in Residence at The Bethlem Gallery, author of ‘The Patient Revolution – how we can heal healthcare’ and ‘The Rare Bird Recovery Protocol’ (poetry collection).

This workshop is generously funded by Maudsley Charity
