‘Inside the Walled Garden’ is an experiment in looking and exploring a small plot left to rewild, to uncover the ancient seed bed, and to learn about the wildflowers growing there.
Inspired by an article by the French philosopher and anthropologist Bruno Latour, artist Sue Morgan, in collaboration with Sergio Heredero, Specialist Horticultural Instructor, have been working together in the Bethlem Royal Hospital Walled Garden. Using a quadrat (a piece of equipment used to identify a sample area and study the organisms within it) they marked out a small plot and have been documenting the appearance and the growth of plants inside it.
The project began in June 2023 and is ongoing. Displayed at the Long Gallery will be photographs and excerpts from Sue’s sketchbooks, documenting her findings from the experiment.
