Things Artists Collect: a Zine

Alongside our exhibition Collection Launch: The Bethlem Gallery Art Collection, we commissioned Bethlem artist Beth Hopkins to create an artists zine.

‘MISC: Things artists collect’
We posed the question, what do artists collect? From Madonna magazines to matryoshka dolls and wombles… 14 artists share their collections in this riso-printed zine by Beth Hopkins.

About the process
After a call out at the Gallery and on Instagram, 14 artists sent in photos and the stories behind their collections. Beth collaged these into a paper master copy, double sided and in two layers – red for the photos and black for the text.

“Then I used the risograph to print them and bring all the layers together. I cut and folded them all in the studio, which took some time but was a real labour of love.” says Beth.

What is Risograph printing?
Risograph printing is a method of printing that uses a stencil to create vibrant, layered prints. It’s similar to screen printing but uses a machine that looks like a photocopier. It’s known for its bright colours and its specific textures.

Risograph printing is a more sustainable printing method as the machine has a low energy consumption, uses soy-based inks, and can take recycled paper, making it a more environmentally friendly alternative to traditional printing methods.
