Inside/Outside by Nikita Gill and Jade Montserrat

We’re so pleased to present a newly commissioned text by Nikita Gill and Jade Montserrat: Inside / Outside. Nikita and Jade have written about some of the ideas and questions behind their active research space Constellations: Care & Resistance and one of the bodies of work in the space, Some Questions About Us by Mark Titchner.

Inside / Outside and Some Questions About Us have both been commissioned for Bethlem Gallery’s Mental Health and Justice project.

Through the lens of Jade’s practice as well as her recent experiences of being restrained by police officers and sectioned under the Mental Health Act, Inside / Outside speaks to urgent themes and issues that resonate with our current times; care & resistance, personal autonomy, structural racism and how we see ourselves through the eyes of others.

Background: In 2019 we exhibited Mark Titchner’s Some Questions About Us at Manchester Contemporary where a set of risograph prints of the work were gifted to Manchester Art Gallery by the Manchester Contemporary Art Fund. We were thrilled to learn last year that the work had been selected by curator Nikita Gill to sit alongside Jade Montserrat’s work as part of Constellations: Care & Resistance at Manchester Art Gallery.

Trigger warning: restraint, suicide, racism
