Express Yourself - Keith Clapson's workshops with ADRU
Ceramic artist Keith Clapson, creator of last autumn’s show Touching the Surface, has been back in the gallery running workshops for Bethlem Royal Hospital’s Anxiety Disorders Residential Unit (ADRU).
Participants used Modroc (bandages coated in Plaster of Paris) to wrap balloons, which were then popped once the plaster had hardened. Clapson describes his own artistic practice as ‘maximalisation, a more is more approach’ and uses glazes in abundance to create vibrant and tactile sculptures. Workshop participants emulated these techniques by using industrial syringes to squirt and gloop thick paint over their Modroc forms. It is a challenging process and the finished results, shown below, look fantastic.
Thanks to Keith Clapson, the ADRU staff team and, of course, the participants for taking part and for their beautiful creations.
