Foraging Walk with Gemma Hindi

Saturday 14 March 2026
2-4pm

Bethlem Gallery and Bethlem Hospital Grounds

Gemma Hindi is an urban ethnobotanist with 20 years’ experience engaging Londoners with plants, trees and fungi. She explores connections between city ‘weeds’, ecology and heritage through her fully wild recipe creations.

In both 2023 and 2025 she lived on a 100% wild food diet for 3 months as part of the Wildbiome Project, a radical citizen science research study looking into the impacts of wild foods on the gut microbiome and health & wellbeing.

With a background in climate science and sustainability, Gemma explores the potential of how foraging wild species may support communities and ecosystems under pressure due to increasing food scarcity and biodiversity loss.

How can you identify an edible or toxic plant? What are the best ways of harvesting or processing a plant into food? What can our wild plant and fungi kin teach us about resilience, cooperation, and wellbeing?

On this guided walk you will learn basic botany and plant identification skills, how to become a safe and sustainable forager, and taste one of Gemma’s wild recipe creations.

Please note: we will move at a slow leisurely pace, pausing frequently to look at species found at varying heights off the ground; we may taste some edible wild plants and pre-made foods- if you have an allergy or dietary requirement please let Gemma know; the session will take place during all weathers apart from high winds and torrential rain- assume it will take place unless you have received a cancellation notice; if you have accessibility needs, please contact us beforehand so we can check that this session will be suitable/adaptable for you; the content will be suitable for both absolute beginners and those wanting to add to their current foraging knowledge; please dress according to the weather on the day- waterproofs, closed toe shoes and covered arms and legs are advised.
