‘Wednesday’

Midweek Works from the Bethlem Studio

20 March – 27 September 2024
The Long Gallery, Maudsley Hospital

(To visit the Long Gallery, please go to the reception at the Maudsley Hospital – there they can let you in and direct you to the Gallery corridor.)

Bethlem Gallery presents Wednesday, an exhibition showcasing new works by Bethlem artists and writers who attend our Wednesday art group sessions.

The Drawing Group is a weekly drop-in drawing group in the studio space co-facilitated by Bethlem artist Tony Allen with Amanda Glynn, Artist Development Lead, and Ed Oaks, Gallery Assistant. The group has been running for 18 months; artists who attend speak about the importance of a weekly creative space to meet with other artists. The group share feedback and socialise.

This exhibition features a small selection of paintings, drawings and prints from artworks that have been produced during the Wednesday sessions, selected by Allen. Artists were invited to submit a piece of work that showed a development in their art practice since they started attending the group.

The title Wednesday plays on the day of the week the artists attend the art studio and of art works left over the last 18 months.

The exhibition also features work by writers who attend The Writing Group, a self-guided writing group who meet at the gallery on Wednesday morning.

Exhibiting artists: The Artist Taxi Driver, Finn, Albert, Kerry, Tom, Colin, Debbie, Paula, Steph, Janet, Kim, Anwar, Baba, Barrington, Halimah, and unknown artists who may have only attended a single session.

Lead image above and on title page both show works by Halimah.
