Studio Showcase: Satis House
Corinne
Bethlem Gallery Studio
7 September – 12 November 2022
Open 10am – 5pm, Wednesday-Saturday
Corinne presents a new work commissioned as part of a Talking Birds residency this year, based on their childhood home.
Talking Birds are a Coventry-based company of artists who host ‘Nest residencies’ with the aim of giving space to the artistic process and focusing on the early stages of an idea or project development.
About the work:
‘With help from Daisy my only childhood and imaginary friend we transformed a vintage doll’s house into our childhood home. The self portraits depict childhood memories – in particular conversations between myself and Daisy. Whilst gluing the photographs to the walls of the house, I felt as if our childhood had transformed into wallpaper.
I wasn’t encouraged to read as a child, but at the age of 15 read my first book Charles Dickens ‘Great Expectations’. It was a struggle and both family and teachers discouraged me. I couldn’t explain my fascination with Miss Havisham and her home Satis House, I just knew her feeling trapped at home and being depressed felt familiar.’
